New Orleans: Southern Seafood Paradise
Not too long ago, I visited New Orleans for the first time. I don’t know who enjoyed it more: me or my taste buds. My partner Reggie and I dubbed our expedition a “foodcation,” and made partaking in delicious meals the focal point of our trip. We also got to see some sights, but the most important question was always, “where are we going for dinner?” As expected, the New Orleans food scene did NOT disappoint, and we didn’t have a bad meal the entire time we were there. There are so many other restaurants I can’t wait to try the next time I’m in town; I didn't even get to most of the recommendations my friend Jenn (who visits New Orleans annually) gave me. Here are some of the highlights of our foodcation.
Bourbon House
An afternoon flight landed us in New Orleans with just enough time to check into our Airbnb, settle in, and freshen up for dinner. A short Uber ride brought us to Bourbon House, right in the heart of the French Quarter. Not only did Bourbon House have charbroiled oysters - a local staple - they also had charbroiled oysters topped with crab meat (pictured above). It was official: we were in seafood heaven and I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off our foodcation.
Head & Tails Seafood & Oyster Bar
The next day, we headed to Heads & Tails Seafood & Oyster Bar for brunch. I ordered the chicken and waffles and Reggie got the BBQ shrimp and grits. They were both delicious, but I have to say, the shrimp and grits were especially tasty. However, the spiced praline sauce drizzled over the chicken and waffles really made the flavor stand out and set it apart from chicken and waffles I've had at other restaurants.
Red Fish Grill
We spent the rest of the day exploring New Orleans, then decided to have dinner at Red Fish Grill. Unfortunately, I don’t remember what Reggie ordered (but I know he enjoyed it) because I was so distracted by my own delicious dish: tuna tataki with crawfish fried rice topped with a fried egg. The crawfish, egg, and tuna created an interesting combination of flavors that played really well together and the tuna was seared so perfectly it practically melted in my mouth. I will definitely be returning to Red Fish Grill the next chance I get.
All in all, it was a great foodcation and I can’t wait to go back to New Orleans!
