Smorgasburg Review
I’m not sure why it took me so long to check out Smorgasburg, but I'm glad I finally made the trip. If you’re not familiar with Smorgasburg, it’s an outdoor food market located in Brooklyn. You can almost think of it as a food festival, but one that happens every weekend (during the warmer months anyway). Founded in 2011, there are now two opportunities to visit Smorgasburg each weekend: in East River State Park in Williamsburg on Saturdays and in Prospect Park on Sundays. Here’s my first impression of this uniquely New York food experience.
something for everyone
A few weeks ago, on the first 70+ degree Saturday of the year, Brooklynites flocked to Smorgasburg to enjoy the summer-like weather and fill their bellies with all the yummy foods they could get their hands on. The crowd was so dense, it felt like half of Brooklyn was there. With dozens of vendors to choose from, it took awhile for me to decide what I wanted to eat. There was truly something for everyone, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and kosher options. After browsing for a bit, I decided to get the fried calamari cone from Bon Chovie (pictured at the very top). The calamari was pretty good; it was crispy and tender and it paired nicely with the aioli that was included. My friend Alyssa got a yummy lamb sandwich (pictured above), but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the vendor.
A little of this, a little of that
Later that afternoon, Alyssa and I split an order of pork and chive and Korean beef dumplings from Destination Dumplings (pictured above). I’m usually a pork and chive fan all the way, but I have to say the Korean beef dumplings were the winners here. I just wish the dumplings were a little bigger (or that each order included a couple more dumplings). But since we’d both already eaten, the dumplings were a sufficient snack. Before we headed out, we got double scoops of ice cream from the Blue Marble cart. I’m a big fan of Blue Marble’s vanilla ice cream, and these flavors (peach and birthday cake) did not disappoint.
Will I Be Back? Absolutely
All in all, I’m happy that I finally got a taste of Smorgasburg, and with summer right around the corner, I’m looking forward to returning for even more yummy eats. Next on my list is definitely the grilled whole lobster served over garlic noodles at Lobsterdamus. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Have you ever been to Smorgasburg? Which vendors are your favorites? Let me know!
Smorgasburg is open from 11am to 6pm each weekend at 90 Kent Ave Brooklyn, NY 11249 on Saturdays, and at East Drive at Lincoln Road on Sundays. Some vendors accept credit cards, but not all, so I recommend bringing cash with you.
