Little Skips East: Much More Than Just Coffee
Little Skips East is a coffee shop in Bushwick, Brooklyn, located on the corner of Covert St. and Broadway. The space was previously occupied by Covert Coffee, which was once my favorite neighborhood coffee shop. When the owner of Covert Coffee sold the space and the new owner transformed it into Little Skips East, I was sad to see my favorite spot go. But I’m happy to say that thanks to great coffee and friendly staff, Little Skips East has stepped out of the shadow of its predecessor and earned its place as my new favorite neighborhood coffee shop. Here’s what I’ve come to love about Little Skips East.

The maple latte might be my favorite drink at Little Skips East. The coconut latte is another delicious choice and one you won’t find at most coffee shops. I’m not sure if they make it with coconut oil or a coconut-infused syrup, but it’s delicious. Little Skips East also offers a variety of tasty seasonal latte offerings. At the time of publication, the current seasonal special is the vanilla rose latte, which was introduced around Valentine’s Day. Before that, the special was the vanilla bourbon latte, which I also really enjoyed. The presentation is always top-notch: the vanilla rose latte is topped with rose petals, and the vanilla bourbon latte is accompanied by a sprig of rosemary and orange zest. The only downside of the lattes here is the price. A flavored almond milk latte is $6.75, which is a little pricier than most places. But, I’m able to overlook this for a couple reasons: Keep reading...
Brewed Coffee
A small cup of brewed coffee is only $2.50 at Little Skips East, and it’s genuinely really good. Not only that but if you order a cup to stay, you can get a free refill. I usually get mine flavored with caramel and topped off with a little almond milk, but I’ve also had it black and it was still pretty good. This is the ultimate test for good coffee because as we all know, even bad coffee is tolerable if you drown it in milk and/or sugar. The free refills are a really great perk, especially if you spend a lot of time there like I do; Little Skips East also has punch cards available for coffee purchases, which reward you with a free coffee on your tenth visit.
Good Food
You can find a daily variety of Dough doughnuts, bagels, croissants, and baked goods like vegan banana bread at Little Skips East. The menu also includes sandwiches, salads, and a delicious black bean soup. I haven’t tried many of the sandwiches on the menu, but I always get food envy whenever someone sitting across from me orders one. I recently tried the J Train sandwich and I have to say it was great. It’s made with turkey, organic egg, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and goat cheese. But what really brings everything together is the BRINS (formerly known as Stagg Jam & Marmalade) chili pepper jam and house-pickled jalapeño which give the sandwich a deliciously sweet and spicy kick.
Coffee. Art. Love.
In addition to Little Skips East, there are two other Bushwick locations: the original Little Skips (located at 941 Willoughby Ave) and Baby Skips (located at 1158 Myrtle Ave). As the company’s motto “Coffee. Art. Love.” indicates, Little Skips is more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee, it’s also a place that fosters creativity. This is reflected in the way the staff presents and serves food and drinks: check out the Little Skips Instagram feed to see what I mean. Little Skips also hosts open mic sessions and art shows from time to time, and you’ll often find local artists of all disciplines among the cafe’s patrons (and staff, if I'm not mistaken). Whether you want a quick cup of joe to go or a productive place to work on a project for a few hours, there's something for everyone at Little Skips East, making it my preferred place to partake in two of my favorite pastimes: writing and drinking coffee.
Until next time...
