Coffee, Anyone?
When it comes to coffee, most people either hate it or love it. Very rarely do I encounter a “once in a blue moon” coffee drinker. Some people treat it as the fuel that gets them going in the morning, the five senses awakened by a freshly brewed cup. Others get the jitters from half a cup or can’t stand the taste. For those of you who are #teamcoffee and live and/or work in Brooklyn, here are some of my favorite local coffee shops. These are all located in the Bushwick/Bed Stuy area. I will, of course, further highlight each of these places in longer, more detailed posts.
Routine Bushwick
I go to Routine about once a week when the weather is nice, and a little less frequently when it’s cold outside. It’s a really nice walk from my apartment when it’s not freezing (about 15 minutes), but it feels a lot longer in inclement weather. They have really great lavender lattes and an amazing selection of freshly baked pastries. Everything served at Routine is vegetarian or vegan. Their vegan carrot cupcakes with cashew cream cheese frosting are my favorite: they’re always nice and moist with just the right amount of sweetness. Their blueberry muffins are delicious too. Routine also has savory breakfast and lunch offerings like their egg sandwich and jackfruit tacos. Read my full review of Routine here.
Daily Press Coffee
There are two Daily Press Coffee locations, and both of them are right off the C train line. The first location is steps away from the Franklin Ave stop and the second location (the one I usually go to) is right next to the Rockaway Ave train station. I have to admit: I’ve never tried any of the food items on the menu, but Daily Press Coffee does serve bagels, pastries, and Four & Twenty Blackbirds Pies. The lattes are consistently great and the brewed coffee is pretty tasty too. The hazelnut lattes are my favorite.
Little Skips East
Located right near the Halsey St. station off the J line, Covert Coffee was easily my favorite neighborhood coffee shop. I would go there to get some work done or to get a coffee to go at least twice a week. The staff was friendly, the coffee was delicious, and the vibe was chill. So when the owner of Covert sold the space and it became Little Skips, the new management had big coffee cups to fill. Little Skips East opened in June 2017, becoming the third Little Skips location here in Brooklyn. I was pleased to find that the new staff were really nice, and although I don’t love the coffee quite as much as I did when it was Covert Coffee (they used coffee from the Brooklyn Roasting Company), I have found a few menu offerings that have become favorites: the maple latte is delicious and their coconut coffee has a unique flavor that you won’t find at your average coffee shop. Just like Covert, Little Skips also offers an array of Dough doughnuts, delivered fresh every day. Read my full review of Little Skips East here.
